Surf to Sierras and Beyond is a unique pairing of photographs with watercolor, graphite, and colored pencil by two bird lovers who have explored the world—as well as West Marin County—to bring the beauty, detail, and diversity of bird life to this show.

2014-1218 Anna's Hummingbird smFrom Pete Myers: I get up close and personal with birds to record with my camera things a casual viewer will never witness. The crispness of plumage…the magic of a feather…extraordinary light drawing out colors…an intimate ballet as two birds interact unaware of my intrusion.

I want these images to astound you, the viewer, so that the next chance you have you take a much closer and more careful look at the wonder of natural selection to which you are a witness.

My weapons of choice are stealth, patience and anticipation. This often means sitting with one bird for hours, photographing hundreds of variations of a pose and then sifting through them to find the one image that captures the bird’s essence.

Hansen_Birds_of_The_Sierra_Plate_068From Keith Hansen: I have recently completed illustrating a book entitled, Birds of the Sierra Nevada: Their Natural History, Status and Distribution. This is a comprehensive and user friendly guide written by Ted Beedy and Ed Pandolfino. In this book I have illustrated the 275 species that inhabit the Sierra Nevada. With watercolor, graphite, and colored pencil, I’m bringing to life all of the species that one could hope to encounter in this impressively large and diverse mountain range. It is my goal to portray each species accurately and in an attractive manner. I want to properly capture the unique features and markings that make each bird species, gender and age identifiable. In addition, I’m portraying most species in flight.
